The smaller towns and villages of Ecuador offer the most authentic experience. Indulge your senses at one of their many markets, with dizzying arrays of textiles, ceramics, carvings and other crafts, not to mention the cornucopia of fresh produce.
The landscape is mountainous, with views of the Cotacachi, Imbabura and Cayambe, interspersed with lakes, in the north and other impressive roll call of towering peaks to the south, appropriately called the Avenue of Volcanoes.
Here, you can browse through the many colorful indigenous markets and colonial towns that nestle among the high volcanic cones. The perfect cone of Cotopaxi volcano is ever-present and is one of the country’s main tourist attractions.
